FG Neglects Agric Research Institutes and Universities, Causing Food Insecurity SEEDEM

The President of the Seeds Entrepreneurs Association of Nigeria, SEEDEM, Yusuf Ado Kibiya, has attributed food insecurity in the country to the Federal Government’s negligence of 32 agricultural research institutions and universities.

Addressing journalists in Kano on Tuesday, Kibiya disclosed that the 16 agricultural research institutions and 16 agricultural universities have been rendered ineffective over time due to the lack of required funding from the Federal Government.

He further highlighted that inconsistent agricultural policies and climate change have also had a negative impact on the country’s food production.

“To solve these problems, both state and federal governments should prioritize seeds production by reengineering and fully funding the 32 institutions, so that the nation can make progress,” he stated.

Kibiya also emphasized that SEEDEM will collaborate with international agencies interested in developing Nigeria’s seeds sector for the benefit of the country’s farmers.

“They are currently working with research institutes and universities to develop earlier generation seeds that will benefit the seed industries and Nigerian farmers,” he added.
