Hopsin Bio – Early Life and Early Career
Hopsin was born and raised in Panorama City, a predominantly Hispanic area in Los Angeles. He was born Marcus Jamal Hopson on July 18, 1985. This skateboarding enthusiast was placed in a special class while attending James Monroe High School.
In 2001, at the age of 16, Marcus started trying his hand at rapping, thanks to the inspiration of Eminem. He finally decided to really make something of it, and released his first project Emurge locally in 2003. In 2004, Hopsin was incarcerated for vandalizing his high school property; he had left school earlier that year. The vandalism that was supposed to be a school prank landed him in Los Angeles County Jail for a year. His friends who had been arrested with him were posted on $20,000 bail.

When he came out in 2005, he decided to take his music and art seriously. He bought a microphone and music production software and started tweaking his own music.
Hopsin began working on his debut album Watching in the Moonlight in 2004, but it was released in 2009, under Ruthless Records, a label he signed up for in 2007. Due to disappointing financial compensation, lack of support and collaboration from the artists and the lack of promotion from the brand, Hopsin wanted to leave.
It was during this period that he formed his independent label, Funk Volume with his friend Damien Ritter. Later, he signed the label to Ritter’s brother, SwiZz, as the first artist. They collaborated on a label promotional project titled Détraqué. However, they couldn’t sell it as Hopsin was still under contract with Ruthless Records at the time. They had to publish it for free on DatPiff. The mixtape has since been certified Gold for surpassing 100,000 downloads on the platform. They would later earn a few dollars when it was available for purchase on Amazon.com and iTunes.
Hopsin released a few singles before the release of their second album. Most notable was the single Sag My Pants, in which he threw punches at RuthlessRecords owner Tomica Wright and rappers like Drake, Soulja Boy, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne and Lupe Fiasco. The song and accompanying video went viral on YouTube, garnering millions of views. The album was released on November 19, 2010. He toured for two months starting in March 2011.
The same year after his tour, Hopsintirade continued, this time focusing on “Tyler, the creator” of Odd Future. He also became a character in the rap game Battle Battle Stars, “Battle Rap Stars”.
In 2012, Hopsin made the “Top 10 Freshmen List” along with other notables like Frenchman Montana, Iggy Azalea and Macklemore. He was also featured in the music video for “Am IA Psycho?” From Tech N9ne. Besides that, he performed on BET Cypher with Mystikal, Mac Miller and Schoolboy Q, at the 2012 Hip Hop Awards.

In July 2012, Hopsin released the video for Hopsin’s Sick Mind 5 At first, he was worried his fans wouldn’t relate to the content of the song. He had started to build a relationship with God after the previous episode of the series and this track proved it. However, the song became the most viewed video on YouTube by Hopsin with over 89 million views till date.
On November 26, 2013, the rapper released his third album Knock Madness. It debuted at No. 76 on Billboard 200. On this project, he worked with animators such as Tech N9ne, SwiZz and Dizzy Wright. He and his Funk Volume Family embarked on an international tour for the album in the fall of 2012. In 2013, the Funk Volume Family also released a video for their song. Funk Volume 2013. Hopsin’s next album, Pound Syndrome was released on July 24, 2015. Records earlier in the month helped the album hit No. 17 on Billboard 200 with 17,000 units sold during the first week. A month before the release, his singles Sag My Pants and Hopsin 5 ‘s Sick Mind received gold certification from the RIAA.
Hopsin left Funk Volume in March 2016, after several business and financial disputes with his co-founder, Damien Ritter. He founded another independent label Undercover Prodigy. In October 2017, he signed a distribution deal with 300 Entertainment and released his fifth album. No shame a month later.

The rapper’s acting career includes additional appearances in Disney Channel movies and TV shows. These included Gilmore Girls, Even Stevens and John Tucker Must Die and more.
